The basis to enter the Chinese market via the Internet is a good and performing website. Website design for Chinese markets and in Chinese language needs to pay attention to some cultural aspects to create a successful and appealing website.

Unfortunately, adapting a website to local and cultural habits -also called website localization- is rather an exception than usual. Instead, to get a quick solution and to save costs, many Western websites are simply translated into Chinese but the website design hasn’t been changed or adapted to Chinese online habits.

Most often this results in a sub-optimal website which looks both strange for Western and Chinese eyes and is pretty unattractive for Chinese users.

What has to be considered to build a successful website for China?

The understanding of user behaviour and consumer interests of Chinese netizens.

Good interaction of Chinese text and website design to achieve a convincing overall result.

Integration of web marketing activities like SEO web design, keyword advertising and other online marketing measures.

Usability and conversion rate optimization

In this year’s publication of the Web Trend Map, the Information Architects chose a Tokyo-area train map style design of the global Internet landscape and it even comes with a great clickable online version. Besides you can download in A3 format and even order a A0 copy for 50 USD. You need to be quick as they online have a thousand copies to distribute.

Of course, the Chinese line of the most important websites in China is included again. It can be found in the top left corner of the map, the green line. Included are Chinese search engines (e.g. baidu ), web 2.0 sites (e.g. video sharing like tudou.com) and news and information sites like sina or phome.

Here is a screenshot, thanks for the great work!

Mediaman China conducted a usability test for Chinese websites with a focus on financial and bank websites. The test took place in a usability test lab in Shanghai. The websites of three Chinese banks were tested (Industrial and Commercial bank of China, Bank of China, Hua Xia Bank) and two websites from German financial institutions (DWS Investments -German version translated into Chinese- and Dresdner Bank Privatkundenportal -German version only-) as well.

Some results are:

Flashy bank websites are ok for Chinese users, but not too overflashed.

A lot of information on the homepage is no problem.

The color scheme of German sites is a little too conservative.

Nice pictures from daily life create an atmosphere of trust.

The whole 58-page report is available upon request. Use this contact form to get a copy.
